The Whitefish Trail is a new trail system located just west of Whitefish. The Whitefish Trail is accessed from HWY 93 north 3 miles from town, 1 mile past the Whitefish Lake Golf Course, via Lion Mountain Loop Road and the Lion Mtn. Trailhead. The trail is open year round for non-motorized recreational use.
The Whitefish Trail offers 12 miles of natural surface trails located in a forested, rural environment popular for mountain biking, hiking and walking; appropriate for families, outdoor enthusiasts, hard core bikers and runners of all abilities. The trail system opened officially in 2010 and offers the Whitefish community a stacked-loop recreation system comprised of single-track trails and gated logging roads.
The Lion Mtn. Overlook Loop is a 2 mile traverse that can be extended into a 4 mile loop depending on your chosen route. Beaver Lake is another fabulous destination accessible from the Whitefish Trail via the Skyles Lake Connection in 4.3 miles or from the Lion Mtn. Trailhead in 6.3 miles. The Whitefish Trail is currently constructing an additional 6 miles of trail to be open to the public for the fall season of 2011. This new section of trail will provide access to the Whitefish Trail from the Beaver Lake Road and the newly constructed Beaver South Trailhead and from the North Murray Road and the Beaver North Connection. The new section of trail traverses the landscape for 4 miles and provides recreational access to Woods Lake. The Beaver Lake Trailheads will provide wonderful equestrian, recreation opportunities as well.
This seamless, year-round trail system is made possible through a collaborative effort with Whitefish Legacy Partners (a local non-profit), City of Whitefish, Montana Department of Natural Resources and Conservation, Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks Service, Flathead County, US Forest Service, private landowners, and many local volunteers. The recreation opportunities available from the Whitefish community may well be some of the best in the country today.
