Founded in 2005, the Whitefish Lake Institute is a member based 501 (c) (3) corporation lead by a volunteer board of directors and two committees.
The Whitefish Lake Institute focuses on scientifc research and community education and outreach. WLI programs are designed to enhance, conserve and protect the natural resources of the Whitefish Lake Watershed. WLI partners with various management agencies to ensure that the public receives the best available scientific data.
Since 2006, WLI has been monitoring long-term trends in water quality for Whitefish Lake and its tributaries. Other specific studies completed or underway include; Gasoline Constitute Loading and Motorized Watercraft Use Levels for Whitefish Lake, and An Investigation of Septic Leachate Along the Shoreline of Whitefish Lake.
WLI's education and outreach program involves presentations at local schools and to civic groups. WLI offers an internship program and partners with the Whitefish School District Project FREEFLOW program to offer field trips and volunteer opportunites to high school students.
WLI also owns and manages 30 acres of wetlands along Viking Creek near Whitefish Lake.
WLI hosts The Whitefish Wine Auction www.whitefishwineauction.org each July.
