The Whitefish area offers plenty of opportunities to float on top of the snow with a pair of snowshoes. A variety of great places to enjoy a peaceful walk on the snow including trails on Whitefish Mountain Resort, Whitefish Trail, around Whitefish Lake, Round Meadows, Glacier National Park and more.
Snowshoe rentals are available at Sportsman & Ski Haus and at the Base Lodge at Whitefish Mountain Resort.
Glacier National Park:
Free Guided snowshoe walks are offered Sat & Sun at 10:30am & 2pm from the Apgar Ranger Station from Jan 8 - March 19, 2017. Self-guided is always available - walking the shores of Lake MacDonald is a popular option, or along the unplowed Going-to-the-Sun Road. Park pass entry fee required. Rentals available.
The Whitefish Trail:
Start at the Lion Mountain Trailhead, just 2 miles from downtown Whitefish. The trail is heavily used in the winter (snowshoes may not be necessary at times!). The Swift Creek Trailhead at the north end of Whitefish Lake is also another great starting point. Dog-friendly.
Located on Star Meadows Road west of town (access from Farm-to-Market Road), the Round Meadow area is a multi-use (xc ski, snowshoe, fat bike) trail system managed by the Forest Service. Dog-friendly. (see PDF map in the sidebar)
Whitefish Mountain Resort:
There are two designated uphill routes at Whitefish Mountain Resort available for snowshoeing. The Toni Matt route goes up the side of Toni Matt and is available from 6am-4pm. The East Route goes up Expressway to Moe-Mentum to the Summit, and is available from 9am-7pm. Follow the Uphill signs on both routes. Read the full uphill policy at http://skiwhitefish.com/uphill-policy/
Snowshoeing is not allowed at the Glacier Nordic Center (golf course) or on the XC trails at Whitefish Mountain Resort. But pretty much anywhere else you can find snow, you can snowshoe!
All skill levels can enjoy snowshoeing.
Dogs are allowed on the Whitefish Trail and at Round Meadow.
They are NOT allowed on trails in Glacier National Park or at Whitefish Mountain Resort.
